INDIANAPOLIS -- UIC sophomore Ryan Boss and Valparaiso senior Kevin Wild have been named Horizon League Baseball Players of the Week for the period of March 19-25.
Boss picked up Batter of the Week accolades after batting .417 (5-of-12) at the plate in UIC’s sweep of Youngstown State last weekend. In the series opener, Boss hit a solo home run in the second-inning to tie the game at three as the Flames defeated the Penguins, 6-5. On Sunday in the series finale, Boss was 3-for-5 at the plate, hitting a double, triple and home run as he was just a single shy of hitting for the cycle. He finished with three RBIs and two runs scored in the contest as UIC completed its sweep of Youngstown State with an 8-0 victory.
In UIC’s two midweek games, Boss batted .427 (3-of-7) with two walks as the Flames fell to Northern Illinois 8-6 and defeated Bradley 3-1.
Wild notched Pitcher of the Week honors after throwing nine innings of no-hit ball against Milwaukee on Saturday. The senior pitcher did not give up a hit to the Panthers until the 10th-inning when UWM’s leadoff batter hit a double. Wild struck out six and walked four as he took the no-decision in Valparaiso’s 1-0 10-inning win over Milwaukee.
Other Horizon League top performers (March 19-25)
Jake Hibberd, Wright State, Sr., 1B - Hibberd batted .500 and slugged .727 in WSU’s four games last week as he recorded at least two hits and two RBIs in every Raider game. He finished the week 11-for-22 batting with one double, one home run and 11 RBIs.
Tanner Vavra, Valparaiso, Jr., IF - Vavra is currently on an eight-game hitting streak after hitting .600 last weekend in the Crusaders’ three games. He hit two doubles and drove in one run in Valparaiso’ three-game series against Milwaukee.
Dan Hurlimann, Youngstown State, So., OF -Hurlimann hit .556 in YSU’s four games last week. He set career-highs with three hits and two runs scored at UIC on Friday night.
Radley Haddad, Butler, Jr., C - Haddad batted .556 and slugged .667 in BU’s three-game series against Wright State.
Cale Tassi, Milwaukee, Jr., RHP - Tassi threw 8.1 scoreless innings in Milwaukee’s 1-0 loss to Valparaiso on Saturday. He allowed only four hits, walked one and struck out five.
Patrick O’Brien, Youngstown State, So., RHP - O’Brien allowed one earned run in six innings in his start against UIC last week. He struck out four Flames and surrendered just four hits in the outing.
Charlie Weinberg, UIC, Jr., RHP - Weinberg threw seven innings of scoreless, four-hit ball as the Flames defeated Youngstown State 8-0 for the team’s first shutout of the season.
