INDIANAPOLIS -- UIC junior Angelos Karkalis (Mount Prospect, Ill.) and sophomore Rebecca Zaiter (Elmhurst, Ill.) have been named the Horizon League Indoor Track Runners of the Week.
It is the first honor of the season for either, though Karkalis' twin brother, Photis, won took the weekly award on Jan. 29.
Angelos Karkalis took first place out of nine competitors in the 800m at the Panter Tune-Up this weekend, posting a 1:53.53 finish, the fifth-fastest in the Horizon League this season. He has turned in the fastest times in the 800m, mile, 3,000m and 5,000m this season for the Flames.
Zaiter ran the indoor mile for the first time in her career over the weekend and broke the UIC school record with a 5:00.09, the fourth-fastest time in the Horizon League this season. She finished first in a field of 11 runners at the EIU Friday Night Special.
Both Karkalis and Zaiter will return to action this weekend as the Flames compete in the Horizon League Championships at the WATTS complex on the campus of Youngstown State. The competition begins Saturday at 9 a.m. and is expected to conclude early Sunday evening.
