UIC's Lane Selected by New York Yankees in MLB Draft's 10th Round

SEACAUCUS, N.J. – UIC left-handed pitcher Trevor Lane was selected by the New York Yankees in the 10th round (308th pick) of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on the second day of activity.

For UIC, It is the third straight year a Flame has been drafted by a major league team. Lane is the third Horizon League player taken in the 2016 MLB Draft, joining the Wright State duo of Sean Murphy and Jesse Scholtens.

Lane, a 22-year-old senior, was 8-5 with a 1.41 ERA (11 ER/70.1 IP), 90 strikeouts and five saves in 26 appearances (one start) for UIC this season. He led the Flames in appearances, wins, strikeouts and saves and was named the Horizon League Relief Pitcher of the Year. He led the League with a .169 average against and ranked among the NCAA leaders in ERA (5th), hits per 9.0 IP (5th, 5.25) and strikeouts per 9.0 IP (13th, 11.52).

“I am excited for Trevor and this next step for him,” said Mike Dee, UIC head coach. “I think he will do well on the professional level because of his skills and impressive work ethic.”

Lane, 5-foot-11, 185 pounds, went 14-8 with a 2.63 ERA (40 ER/137.0 IP), 142 strikeouts and five saves in 39 career outings (11 starts) for the Flames. He began his career as a starter before converting to the relief role in 2016.

Lane is the fourth UIC player (third pitcher) chosen in the past three drafts, joining left-hander Ryan Hinchley (CWS, 2015), outfielder Jeff Boehm (LAA, 2015) and right-hander Tomas Michelson (TB, 2014).

A native of North Bend, Wash., Lane was the 2012 Washington State Gatorade Player of the Year coming out of Mount Si High School.
