Green Bay, Wis. - The UW-Green Bay women's basketball team (27-3) earned the No. 10 seed in the Philadelphia Region of the 2005 NCAA tournament and will face the No. 7 seed and host school University of Maryland Sunday, March 20 in College Park, Md. Game time will be announced at a later time.
This will be the first ever meeting between the two teams. The Phoenix owns a 3-2 all-time record against current member schools of the Atlantic Coast Conference, including its most recent 83-72 victory over Miami at the 2002 Oneida Bingo & Casino Holiday Tournament in Green Bay.
The Phoenix, the Horizon League regular season and tournament champions, is making its fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament. Last season, UW-Green Bay fell in the first round of the Big Dance to Houston as the No. 14 seed in the East Region in Santa Barbara, Calif. UW-Green Bay earned its first ever NCAA tournament win in 2003, when the Phoenix, as the No. 8 seed in the West Region, defeated Washington in Eugene, Ore.
Maryland (21-9) lost in the semifinals of the 2005 ACC tournament, falling to Duke March 6, 74-44. The Terrapins earned an at-large berth after posting a 7-7 mark in the ACC. It will be the second straight trip to the NCAA tournament for the Terps and 14th trip since 1982.
The winner of the Maryland/UW-Green Bay contest will face the winner between No. 2 seed Ohio State and No. 15 seed Holy Cross Tuesday, March 22. The Big Ten's Buckeyes earned an at-large bid while Holy Cross gathered the automatic bid from the Patriot League.
Joining UW-Green Bay's quartet at Maryland is a pod from the Chattanooga Region: No. 4 Penn State will face No. 13 Liberty while No. 5 DePaul will take on No. 12 Virginia Tech, with both games also slated for Sunday, March 20.
