Men's Soccer Ties Oakland in Horizon League Opener -- Box Score
ROCHESTER, Mich. – The UIC men’s soccer team (4-2-2, 0-0-1) played 110 minutes before coming to a 1-1 (2OT) draw with Oakland (0-5-1, 0-0-1) on Friday night at the OU Soccer Field to open the Horizon League season. Freshman Jose Fuentes scored for the Flames in the 27th minute on a cross from senior Jesus Torres to garner his second goal of the season.
UIC was held without a shot until Fuentes charged the net and headed in the Flames’ lone goal of the game on Torres’ cross. UIC got off three additional shots before the first half came to a close, but all attempts were blocked. Read more
Oakland Draws with UIC, 1-1, in League Opener -- Box Score
ROCHESTER, Mich. - Matt Rickard scored a goal in the second half to lead Oakland to a 1-1 draw in its league opener with UIC in men's soccer action Friday night at the Oakland Soccer Field. The Golden Grizzlies outshot the defending Horizon League regular-season champions 15-12 in the match.
"We are disappointed with our record but we knew moving forward that this is a new season and no better way to come out against an excellent UIC team, the defending Horizon League champions," said head coach Eric Pogue. "It was an excellent game. I am proud of the boys' effort. We recommitted to the things that make Oakland soccer successful: team defending, heart, effort, grit. We play like that we have a chance to be a good team." Read more
Crusaders Welcome Bruins to Horizon League with Win -- Box Score
The Valparaiso men’s soccer team opened Horizon League play Friday night by welcoming Belmont to the league, upstaging the Bruins' league opener in Nashville with a 2-1 victory. Valpo moves to 5-1-2 (1-0 Horizon League) on the season.
The Brown and Gold got their offense going early, almost deja vu from Valpo’s win on Tuesday, as senior midfielder Zev Taublieb (Malibu, Calif./Agoura) pounced on a rebound in front of the goal in the 14th minute to score his second goal of the season and as in many games. Read more
Men's Soccer Courageous in Horizon League Opener Setback to Valparaiso -- Box Score
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - Belmont University men's soccer more than held its own, but dropped a hard-fought 2-1 decision to Valparaiso Friday night.
The Bruins, making their Horizon League debut, played with tremendous verve and emotion against a Crusader side that earned national Top 25 votes a week ago. Read more
