Valparaiso University senior Steve Bartholomew (men's indoor track & field) and University of Wisconsin-Green Bay junior Kelsey Hausken (women's swimming) have been named the U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Week, League commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone announced Tuesday (Jan. 22).

Bartholomew won the weight throw at the University of Chicago's Phoenix Invitational this weekend, registering a toss of 56 feet, 4 3/4 inches. He defeated the runner-up by over five feet, and earned his second victory in as many meets this season in the event.

As a management major, Bartholomew owns a 3.281 grade-point average. He was named to the Mid-Continent Conference All-Academic Team last year, and was also recognized on the Mid-Con Commissioner's List of Academic Excellence.

Hausken won two individual crowns on Saturday (Jan. 19), as Green Bay beat Butler to earn its eighth-consecutive dual meet victory. She took top honors in the 50-yard freestyle (24.72) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.07), and was the only swimmer to win two races at the meet. Hausken also swam on the winning 200-yard medley relay team (1:53.29).

In the classroom, Hausken boasts a 3.516 grade-point average as a history major. She earned recognition last season on both the Fall and Spring Horizon League Academic Honor Rolls.

The Horizon League instituted the U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution and passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours, and perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
