Valparaiso University sophomore Chris Honig (men's track & field) and Butler University senior Genni Gardner (women's track & field) have been named the U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Week, League commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone announced Tuesday (April 15).
Honig posted a second-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Miami (Ohio) Team Challenge last week, matching the Crusaders' best individual placement at the meet. His time of 9:31.78 was just five seconds behind the winner and only seven seconds off of Honig's career-best time in the event.
In the classroom, Honig maintains a 3.598 grade-point average as a history major. A previous U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete in cross country, Honig was also named to the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll last fall, and the Academic All-League teams in both cross country and indoor track and field. He previously earned Mid-Continent Conference Academic All-Conference Honors in 2006.
Gardner captured Butler's lone first-place finish at the Miami (Ohio) Team Challenge, winning the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:34.53. She was also the lone League runner to place first in the 14-team meet, which included two other circuit teams.
Academically, Gardner boasts a 3.943 grade-point average as a communications disorders major. She has been named to the Academic All-League teams in both cross country and track and field, as well as the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll. She was also chosen on the CoSIDA District V All-Academic Team, and the 2007 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team.
The Horizon League instituted the U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution and passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours, and perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
