INDIANAPOLIS -- Valparaiso sophomore Jeffrey Schorsch (Perrysburg, Ohio) is the Men’s Tennis Player of the Week while Youngstown State senior Marta Burak (Lviv, Ukraine) is the Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 27- Feb. 3.
The Valparaiso men’s tennis team competed in two dual matches this past week at home. The Crusaders hosted IPFW on Friday and IUPUI on Saturday. The squad defeated the Mastodons 6-1 and picked up their second win of the week against the Jaguars, 5-2.
Schorsch went undefeated in both singles and doubles play for Valparaiso over the two matches. Against IPFW’s
Daniel Cardenas at No. 2 singles he won in straight-sets 6-3, 6-3. With teammate Dave Bacalla at No. 1 doubles, the duo out matched the Mastodons’ Gerard Guell and Connor Andrews to grab a 6-1 victory. While facing IUPUI’s Alex Toliver, Schorsch earned his second No. 2 singles victory of the weekend in a three-set match 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. Back in action with Bacalla in doubles, the pair defeated Patrick O’Neill and Toliver, 6-2.
Youngstown State competed in two matches on Sunday against IPFW and Ball State. The Penguins defeated IPFW 5-2 and fell to the Cardinals in a close 3-4 match.
Burak had an impressive day on the court, winning each of her singles and doubles matches. At No. 1 singles facing IPFW’s Mayu Sato, the senior grabbed a tough three-set victory 7-5, 2-6, 10-5. In doubles action with teammate Dominika Lackova at No. 1, the pair defeated Marcy Huck and Sato in a decisive 6-2 match. Sunday night facing Ball State, Burak continued to dominate at the singles top spot, winning 6-1, 7-5 versus the Cardinals’ Courtney Wild. With Lackova in doubles play, the tandem picked up their second win of the day against Bethany Moore and Wild, 6-4.
The Penguins continue action on the court on Wednesday, February 4 against Akron at home with the match set to start at 1:00 p.m. ET. The Crusaders host Eastern Illinois on Saturday, February 7 with the dual beginning at 3:00 p.m. ET.
Top Men’s Tennis Players of the Week:
Leopold Gomez Islinger, Green Bay (Jr.): Was the only Green Bay player to capture a singles victory against No. 48 Minnesota, winning 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 (10-5). Also won at No. 1 singles facing Whitewater in straight-sets 6-2, 6-1.
Ricardo Pineda, Wright State (Sr.): Won at No. 5 singles against Dayton 6-4, 6-4 and at No. 2 doubles 6-4.
Joe VanMeter, Cleveland State (Jr.): Won both matches against Ball State with a straight-set victory at No. 1 singles 6-2, 7-5 and at No. 3 doubles, 6-3.
Top Women’s Tennis Players of the Week:
Anna Davydova, Detroit (So.): Grabbed a pair of wins at No. 4 singles against Western Michigan (6-7 (4), 6-3, 1-0 (9)) and No. 35 Tennessee (0-6, 6-4, 2-0 retired).
Aby Madrigal, Wright State (So.): Won at No. 2 singles against Southeast Missouri (7-6, 6-4) and at No. 1 doubles (7-6). Also defeated Dayton at No. 2 singles (6-4, 6-3) and No. 1 doubles (6-2).
