HORIZON LEAGUE HEADLINES
1. Green Bay moved to 4-0 with a pair of wins last week. The Phoenix already owns three victories by 11 points or more on the season.
2. Detroit picked up its first victory of the season last weekend, a 70-66 win over #23 Georgia at Calihan Hall.
3. Loyola's Elyse Van Bogaert scored 29 points Monday night, marking this season's Horizon League single-game high.
HORIZON LEAGUE NEWS AND NOTES
BUTLER BULLDOGS (1-2)
Butler, led by Lade Akande's 18 points, picked up its first victory of the season last week at IPFW, 72-56. Akande shot 9-for-12 from the floor in the victory. Lade Akande moved into fifth on Butler's all-time scoring list with 1,402 points. She needs 47 points to move into fourth place. Butler is second in the Horizon League - and first among teams that have played multiple games - in assist-to-turnover ratio. BU averages 1.28 assists per turnover and is currently second in the conference in turnover margin (+6). Freshman Devin Brierly recorded her first career double-digit scoring performance, racking up 10 points at IPFW last week. She currently leads the Bulldogs with three 3-pointers.
CLEVELAND STATE VIKINGS (2-2)
Junior Kailey Klein became the 20th player in CSU history to score 1,000 career points, passing the mark last Tuesday against Eastern Michigan. She became the fourth Viking to reach the mark as a junior. The Vikings shot 57.4 percent (27-for-47) in their win over Eastern Michigan, which was the highest single-game mark since Jan. 21, 1980, when CSU shot 62.7 percent against Niagara. Junior Jessica Roque totaled 17 points in last Friday's win over Illinois State, marking the second highest performance of her career. It is topped only by a 25-point effort two years ago against the College of Charleston. Junior Kailey Klein scored 14 points in the season opener and needs just 14 more to become the 20th player in Cleveland State history to score 1,000 points.
DETROIT TITANS (1-2)
Detroit picked up its first win against an SEC opponent since 1979 with its 70-66 win over No. 23 Georgia. It was also UDM's first win against a ranked opponent this decade. Detroit hosted Georgia, marking the first time the Titans have hosted a ranked oppponent since No. 17 DePaul came to Calihan Hall on Dec. 15, 2006. Senior Zemora Davis scored 20 points in the Titans' win over Georgia. She added 13 points in a loss at Michigan State last week, Freshman Lauren Allen picked up her first career double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds against Georgia.
GREEN BAY PHOENIX (4-0)
Green Bay's 4-0 start is its third such start this decade. The Phoenix began the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons with at least four straight wins. Green Bay, which went 26-6 last season en route to a WNIT berth, leads the Horizon League in team defense, yielding just 51.8 points per game. The Phoenix also leads in scoring margin (+13.5). Green Bay leads the Horizon League in free throw shooting, knocking down 76.4 percent (55-for-72) of its foul shots. Senior Rachel Porath, last week's Horizon League Player of the Week, is 47 points shy of 1,000 for her career.
LOYOLA RAMBLERS (2-1)
Junior Elyse VanBogaert scored 29 points - a Horizon League single-game high - in Monday night's 81-63 win over NAIA foe Robert Morris College. She added nine rebounds and shot 10-for-18 from the floor. Loyola's road victory at Chicago State equaled the Ramblers' amount of road wins for last season. Elyse VanBogaert led the team with 16 points on 8-for-11 shooting. Junior Maggie McCloskey knocked down a pair of three-pointers to extend her streak of games with at least one trey to 52 straight. Junior Jessica Hylton is leading the Ramblers with 14.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.
MILWAUKEE PANTHERS (1-2)
Senior Traci Edwards continues her assault on the Horizon League record book. She made four free throws last week, bringing her career total to a Horizon League-record 540. The previous record was 538 by Green Bay's Chari Nordgaard (1995-99). After committing 11 turnovers at Air Force on Saturday, Milwaukee has 24 turnovers during the past two games. It's the team's lowest two-game total since early in the 2006-07 season. The Panthers are third in the Horizon League in turnover margin (+4.3).
UIC FLAMES (1-0)
Head coach Lisa Ryckbosch picked up her 89th career vicory in UIC's 72-61 win over Bradley, tying her for the Flames' wins record. Junior Jessie Miller's total of 24 points against Bradley is the Horizon League's single-game high thus far. Two other players have registered 23-point performances. Freshman Jasmine Bailey registered her first career double-double on Saturday, scoring 11 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Junior Briana Hinkle had 15 points and four steals against Bradley.
VALPARAISO CRUSADERS (1-0)
Valparaiso took revenge against Bowling Green in its season opener with a 69-58 win. Valpo improved to 1-3 against the Falcons, avenging a 25-point loss to BGSU last year. Senior Launa Hochstetler recorded seven assists against Bowling Green, moving into 12th place on Valparaiso's all-time assists list with 232. Valparaiso out-rebounded Bowling Green, 36-32. Last season, the Crusaders only out-rebounded four opponents. Senior Aimee Litka, who totaled 17 points and 12 rebounds in the season opener, has scored in double digits in 28 of her last 31 games.
WRIGHT STATE RAIDERS (0-1)
Wright State trailed by double digits in each half of its 63-59 loss at Evansville last Saturday. The Raiders cut the lead to three in the final minute before falling. WSU is 38-28 in Horizon League play the last four seasons. During the previous four seasons, the Raiders were 20-42 in conference games. Sophomore LaShawna Thomas led the Raiders at Evansville with 22 points. Sophomore Shey Peddy had 13. Freshman Molly Fox, playing her first collegiate game, came off the bench to score 10.
YOUNGSTOWN STATE PENGUINS (0-3)
Youngstown State has already recorded 10 or more steals in each of its three games. YSU currently ranks second - and first among teams that have played multiple games - in the Horizon League with 12.0 steals per game. The Penguins made a second-half run in losses to Buffalo and Niagara last week. Against Buffalo, YSU cut a 13-point lead to three before losing by 24. Youngstown State also trimmed Niagara's 18-point lead to seven before losing by 14. Youngstown State will see a familiar face when it travels to Pittsburgh for a Thanksgiving tournament this weekend. Caroline McCombs, a recent YSU Hall of Fame inductee, is an assistant coach at Pitt.
