American Family Horizon League Championship Game
No. 1 UW-Green Bay 58, No. 3 Wright State 48
Dayton, Ohio - UW-Green Bay defeated Wright State 58-48 to advance to its fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament. With the victory, the Phoenix jumps to 27-3 overall as Wright State ends the season at 19-11. UWGB concluded the first period with a three-point lead (21-18) and opened the second-half with a 12-0 run that put the game out of reach. Tournament MVP Tiffany Mor finished the contest with 14 points and 11 rebounds while Natalie Berglin added 14 points. Jeanette Woodberry led the Raiders with 13 points and five rebounds while Whitney Lewis added 12 points and six boards. The 2005 All-Tournament Team included Tiffany Mor, Abby Scharlow and Nicole Soulis of UW-Green Bay, Whitney Lewis of Wright State and Dejeanette Flournoy of UIC.
Semifinal Match-Ups
No. 1 UW-Green Bay 72, No. 4 UIC 59
Dayton, Ohio - UW-Green Bay downed UIC 72-59 to advance to the finals of the 2005 American Family Horizon League Championship. With the victory, the Phoenix advances to 26-3 on the season while the Flames slip to 14-15. Green Bay concluded the first half with a 38-35 advantage but outscored UIC 34-24 in the second period to claim the tournament victory. UWGB's Abby Scharlow led all-scorers with 24 points to go along with seven rebounds, five assists and five steals. Tiffany Mor followed with 18 points and 14 boards. UIC was led by Dejeanette Flournoy whoposted a double-double of 18 and 18 rebounds.
No. 3 Wright State 76, No. 7 Detroit 66
Dayton, Ohio - Wright State defeated Detroit 76-66 to advance to the championship game of the 2005 American Family Horizon League Championship. The final game will be played Monday at the Nutter Center at 6:00 p.m. EST and will be the Raiders first Horizon League championship appearance. Wright State moves to 19-10 overall while Detroit drops to 9-20 on the season. WSU used a 10-0 first-half run to finish the period with a 37-24 advantage. The Titans came within five points (71-66) in the second stanza but could not come any closer as the Raiders scored the final six points. Wright State was led by Tyanda Hammock who scored 18 points while Angie (Ott) Griffith finished with 15 points and eight rebounds. The Titans were paced by Lindsey Pasquinzo who posted 19 points and Katie Solner who added 16.
Quarterfinal Action
No. 1 UW-Green Bay 96, No. 9 Cleveland State 66
Green Bay, Wis. - UW-Green Bay defeated Cleveland State 96-66 in the quarterfinals of the American Family Horizon League Championship. UWGB will advance to the semifinals where it will meet UIC on Sunday at the Nutter Center in Dayton, Ohio. The Phoenix held a 10-point (42-32) halftime advantage but unleashed a second-half 41-10 run to march on to victory. The Phoenix placed five scorers in the double figures led by a 23-point performance turned in by Nicole Soulis. Tiffany Mor followed with 18 points and seven rebounds. Erin Martin led the Vikings with 18 points while Brittany Korth added 15.
No. 4 UIC 78, No. 5 Butler 47
Chicago, Ill. - UIC downed Butler 78-47 in the quarterfinal round of the American Family Horizon League Championship. With the win, the Flames will move on to face No. 25 UW-Green Bay at the Nutter Center in Dayton, Ohio on Sunday. For the contest, UIC shot 47 percent compared to the 25 percent turned in by the Bulldogs. UIC placed four scorers in the double-figures led by LaShonda Grant's 17 points. Dejeanette Flournoy added her sixth double-double of the season with 13 points and 16 rebounds. Butler was paced by Cortney Urquhart who finished the contest with 13 points and five boards.
No. 3 Wright State 66, No. 6 Youngstown State 52
Dayton, Ohio - Youngstown State fell 66-52 to Wright State in the quarterfinals of the American Family Horizon League Championship on Thursday. With the victory, the Raiders will bring the championship home and host the semifinals and championship game slated for Sunday and Monday. After trailing 37-19 at the break, the Penguins outscored Wright State 33-29 in the second period, but it was not enough to claim the win. Brittney Whiteside led the Raiders with a double-double of 13 points and 10 boards. Angie (Ott) Griffith chipped in 14 points and six rebounds. Jen Perugini paced YSU with 12 points and nine boards.
No. 7 Detroit 59, No. 2 UW-Milwaukee 49
Milwaukee, Wis. - Detroit upset UW-Milwaukee 59-49 at the Klotsche Center in the quarterfinal round of the American Family Horizon League Championship on Thursday. The Titans will continue on their championship path to face Wright State at the Nutter Center in Dayton on Sunday. Katie Solner led the Titans with 15 points while Lindsey Pasquinzo followed with 13. UWM was led by Kimberly Becker who posted 14 points and nine rebounds.
First Round Game
No. 9 Cleveland State 62, No. 8 Loyola 55
Chicago, Ill. - Cleveland State downed Loyola 62-55 in the first round of the 2005 American Family Horizon League Championship on Tuesday night. With the victory, the Vikings will advance to the quarterfinal round where they will face UW-Green Bay at the Phoenix Sports Center on Thursday. Cleveland State entered the break with a 29-21 advantage after scoring 12 of the final 14 first-half points. The visiting team extended the lead to 43-27 midway through the second stanza, but the Ramblers fought back with an 18-8 run. Loyola cut the deficit to six points, but it was not enough as the Vikings would claim the victory. Despite the loss, Rambler Jenna Real scored a game-high 20 points while Ciara Henderson added 18. Omega Harrington and Brittany Korth led the Vikings with 10 points apiece.
