League Match Recaps:
Cleveland State 2, Detroit 0

Cleveland State earned three points in the Horizon League opener on Saturday with a 2-0 victory over Detroit at Krenzler Field.

The Vikings, improved to 7-4-1 overall and 1-0 in league play. CSU, which is 5-0-1 in its last six matches, also stayed undefeated at home this year (6-0-1).

The six match unbeaten streak is the longest in program history.

Detroit fell to 5-5-1 overall and 0-1 in league play.

It was just the second time in program history CSU has defeated the Titans, the last coming in 2009, a 1-0 win at Krenzler Field.

The clean sheet was the fourth shutout of the season for CSU, as the Vikings have surrendered just two goals over the last six matches.

Sarah Wood posted four saves, raising her season total to 82, while earning her fourth shutout of the season.

The Vikings got on the board 25 minutes into the match when sophomore Vickie Havas scored on a free kick from 20 yards out on the left wing from just outside the box. It was the team and league-leading sixth goal of the season for Havas. She raised her career point total to 30, becoming just the fourth player in program history to reach the mark.

Junior Amanda Sivic made it 2-0 at the 58:53 mark with her fourth goal of the season off a Taylor Vidovic assist.

Vidovic started the play just past midfield when she flicked a ball towards Sivic with her head. Sivic took control and beat her defender up the field, unleashing a shot from just outside the box on the left wing that beat the Titan keeper to the far post.

Milwaukee 3, Valparaiso 2
Krissy Dorre scored twice, Kelsey Holbert also found the back of the net and Paige Lincicum made seven saves as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team kicked off Horizon League play with a 3-2 win over Valparaiso University Saturday night in front of 387 at Engelmann Stadium.

Milwaukee (3-7-1, 1-0-0 HL) scored three goals on a Valparaiso (6-4-1, 0-1-0 HL) defense that had conceded only five goals in 10 games all season. VU keeper Kristen Manski came into the game with a 0.48 goals-against average, one of the top marks in the country.

But the Panther attack was too much on Saturday, registering 13 shots and scoring multiple goals in a match for the fifth time this season.

Valparaiso struck first on Heiley Chmela's second goal of the season. Chmela collected the ball on the right wing, made a move and lofted a ball toward goal that floated just over Lincicum's head to give VU an early 1-0 lead in the 27th minute.

The Panthers answered right back less than two minutes later on a blast from junior Kelsey Holbert. Dorre sent a centering pass from the right corner to the top of the box where Holbert was waiting and fired. The ball took a deflection but had plenty of pace on it and found the back of the net to draw the game level at 1-1.

Dorre then put the Panthers ahead just before the half, taking a long pass from Callie O'Donnell and one-timing it far post past Valpo's Kristen Manski.

Dorre struck again midway through the second half. Maria Stephans dribbled up the field and found Dorre open just outside the box. The junior turned with the ball, took a touch and blasted the ball past the diving keeper for what proved to be the game-winner.

Although Valparaiso scored again on a rebound inside the box with just over 10 minutes to play, the Milwaukee defense held strong as Lincicum tallied six saves with her defense recording a save, as well.

Wright State 1, Youngstown State 0
The Wright State women's soccer team picked up a 1-0 victory over Youngstown State in the Horizon League opener Saturday at Alumni Field.

The lone goal of the contest came at the 48:15 mark of the second half as senior forward Emilie Fillion scored her sixth goal of the season on a pass from sophomore forward Natalie Sedlock.  It was Sedlock's second assist of the year.

Senior goalkeeper Brooke McCurdy recorded her 18th career shutout, third this season, and became WSU's all-time leader in saves with 345 as she tallied five in the match.

Youngstown State junior goalkeeper Jackie Podolsky recorded seven saves in the loss.

Green Bay 2, Oakland 0
Playing strong out of the gates, the Green Bay women’s soccer team used its offensive grit to churn out two first half goals and top Oakland, 2-0, in its first conference game of the season on Friday afternoon at Santaga Stadium.

The win improved Green Bay to 4-3-3 overall and 1-0-0 in the Horizon League. Conference newcomer Oakland dropped to 4-5-1 and 0-1-0 in the Horizon.

A persistent Heidi Hartmann started the scoring in the fifth minute. Hartmann kept chipping away at Oakland keeper Stephanie Bukovec, fighting to put three shots on goal that kept deflecting off Bukovec before she finally collected the rebound on the third shot and chipped it over the keeper for a 1-0 advantage.

Renee Therrien nearly added her first goal of the season in the 18th minute, but her shot from 18 yards out ricocheted off the post and Oakland was able to clear the ball to quell the offensive threat.

Persistence paid off again to close the first half, as Hannah Kernen put a shot on goal in the 43rd minute. Bukovec mishandled the shot, losing it behind her and Kernen kept on the attack, hopping over Bukovec and tapping the ball home to add to the lead, 2-0.

The Phoenix set the tone in the first half, putting seven of its nine shots on goal, compared to four total shots with two on goal for the Golden Grizzlies.
Green Bay played more defensive minded in the second half but still managed to put five shots on the board, including a breakaway from Hartmann that sailed just wide of the net in the 85th minute. Oakland stepped up its offensive pressure and tallied 10 shots in the second stanza, forcing Green Bay keeper Nastacia Behle into save situations on half of the shots.

However, the defense held strong and earned the fourth shutout of the season.

For the game, shots were even at 14, while Oakland owned a 2-0 edge in corner kicks. Behle played the entire game in net, making seven saves to earn her second win of the season.

Non-Conference Recaps:
Green Bay 0, Loyola 0 (2ot)

In a tough non-conference Sunday battle, the Green Bay women’s soccer team drew a scoreless tie against former Horizon League foe Loyola at Santaga Stadium.

The draw put Green Bay’s overall record at 4-3-4 and concluded a four match homestand with a record of 2-1-1. Loyola evened its record at 4-4-4.

A back-and-forth opening half saw both teams trying to establish their offenses, posting a combined four shots. Loyola’s best opportunity came in the 20th minute as a header by Ashley Bovee went towards goal before Green Bay keeper Nastacia Behle collected the shot and sent the ball toward the other end of the field for a waiting Hekla Palmadottir. However, Palmadottir’s breakaway shot sailed wide of the net.

The Phoenix applied offensive pressure to open the second half as Emily Friedl put a shot on goal less than a minute into action, and Heidi Hartmann followed with two more shots over a two-minute span. Offensive intensity continued to build as Renee Therrien and Ahna Logan also forced Loyola keeper Monica Gonyo into save situations.

Momentum swung in favor of the visitors to close the half, but the Green Bay defense held strong and shut down the Ramblers to force extra minutes.

It was a quiet first overtime, with Loyola putting two shots on the board. The Phoenix held the advantage in the second session with three shots and had a prime scoring opportunity with 1:40 remaining. Katie Schulz served the ball into the box after a Loyola foul and the Phoenix saw several touches and attempts to score as the ball bounced around before a shot from Hartmann sailed wide and ended the threat.

Green Bay led in shots for the match, 11-9, while Loyola held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks. Hartmann finished with a match-high five shots. Behle played the entire match and made two saves en route to collecting her second-consecutive shutout and third of the season.

St. Francis (Pa.) 3, Oakland 1
Alice Palmer scored her second goal of the season but it was not enough as the Oakland women's soccer team (4-6-1) dropped a non-conference match to St. Francis (PA), 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at the OU Soccer Field. The Golden Grizzlies outshot the Red Flash 27-13 in the match.

With Oakland down 3-0 late in the second half, Palmer would receive a long through ball from Meghan Reynolds and was able to put it by the keeper in the 81st minute.

SFU would get on the board first as Beatriz Maros de Carvalho would get a shot off the rebound from a corner and was able to put it past Payj O'Shea. Tesa McKibben would score two goals as her first came in the first half in the 35th minute as she took a shot from just inside the box that trickled into the net and in the 63rd minute with a header from a cross.

O'Shea finished the match with four saves, allowing three goals and SFU's Jena Laferty earned six saves and allowing one goal.
