PENDLETON, Ind. - Wright State University took advantage of several defensive miscues with six runs in the sixth inning to rally past Loyola University Chicago 8-4 Friday in the Horizon League Softball Championship at Legends Field in Pendleton, Ind., in the conclusion of a game that was suspended by lightning and rain Thursday night.
Trailing 4-2, the third-seeded Raiders (33-19) tied the game on back-to-back errors by Loyola, and Louie Haney singled home Michelle Baker for their first lead since the second inning. Katie Kine scored on a wild pitch by Loyola starter Amy Solava and Kristen Bradshaw followed with a two-run double to left off reliever Krista Crosson for the final margin.
Sharon Palma (19-10) threw a complete game to earn the victory, striking out 10 and surrendering only one earned run.
Loyola scored three runs in the top of the third to go up 3-2 when play was suspended Thursday with two outs. When play resumed Friday, Kirsten Medrud was hit by a pitch and Bridget Lally followed by singling in Kristin Guska, but that was all the Ramblers could muster.
Wright State had scored single runs in the first and second innings to take an early 2-0 lead.
Amy Solava (14-13) took the loss after allowing eight runs - but only two earned - in 5 1/3 innings.
Wright State advances to face second-seeded Cleveland State University today at 1 p.m. ET, with the winner advancing to meet top-seeded and regular-season champion University of Illinois at Chicago at 8 p.m.
Loyola drops into the consolation bracket and will play at 4 p.m. against the winner of the Valparaiso University-Youngstown State University game that begins at 9 a.m.
