WSU's Makikalli, Milwaukee's Colarossi Collect Tennis Athletes of the Week Honors

INDIANAPOLIS -- Wright State freshman Lauri Makikalli (Hyvinkaa, Finland) has been named Horizon League Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week, while Milwaukee freshman Christina Colarossi (Dearborn Heights, Mich.) has earned Horizon League Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week honors, for the week of Feb. 20-26.

Makikalli went 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles, helping Wright State (7-2) collect wins over IPFW and Chicago State. Against the Mastodons, Makikalli slotted at No. 3 singles, collecting a 6-0, 6-1 victory. The next day, Makikalli moved up to No. 2 singles, breezing to a 6-2, 6-0 win.

In doubles play, the freshman teamed with Martin Arguello at No. 2 doubles in both matches, collecting a 9-7 win on Friday before rolling to an 8-2 victory against Chicago State.

Colarossi helped Milwaukee (7-3, 2-0 Horizon) match its best start to the season with two wins as the Panthers improved to 2-0 with a 7-0 victory over Valparaiso before a 4-3 triumph over Ball State. The freshman opened the weekend with a straight set win at love at No. 3 singles versus the Crusaders. The following day against Ball State, Colarossi dropped the first set of her match, 4-6, before rallying for a 6-3, 6-4 win to clinch the match for the Panthers.

Teaming with Maddy Soule at No. 1 doubles, Colarossi went 2-0 on the weekend, improving to 8-2 and helping Milwaukee secure the doubles point in both matches.

Wright State will stay within the Dayton city limits on Saturday, March 3, meeting the University of Dayton at 3 p.m. ET, in its lone match of the week. Milwaukee will welcome Northern Iowa to town for a match on Friday, March 2, ahead of the Panthers’ road trip to Northern Iowa for a Saturday, March 3, match.
