Youngstown State Fends Off Loyola in Tuesday Men's Basketball Action

YOUNGSTOWN-Quin Humphrey scored a career-high 26 points, including 11 in the final 4 1/2 minutes, to lead Youngstown State (3-6, 1-1) to a 76-68 victory over visiting Loyola Tuesday night in Horizon League action. He was key to a nine-point run in the last four minutes that stretched the Penguins' 63-62 lead to 72-62 and put the game away. Youngstown State led 30-28 at halftime before Pierre Parker's three-pointer gave the Ramblers (2-8, 0-1) the lead moments into the second half. But that would be Loyola's final lead as the Penguins responded with nine straight points and never trailed again. Zach Silverman netted a career-best 17 points for Youngstown State, while Brian Radakovich grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds to go along with nine points. Loyola's Blake Schilb scored a career-high 25 points as part of an all-around game that included four rebounds, four steals, three assists and three blocks. Majak Kou added 14 points off the bench for the Ramblers, who suffered their seventh straight loss.

UW-Parkside 79, UIC 73


CHICAGO-Over the beginning eight games of the season, UIC has faced national powerhouses such as Duke and Georgia Tech, both times coming away with losses, but performing admirably in defeat. The Flames were faced with a challenge of their own on Tuesday night, as they welcomed upset-minded, Division II UW-Parkside and the scorching three-point touch of junior guard Gareth Malkowski to the UIC Pavilion. Malkowski tallied a UIC Pavilion record-eight three-pointers and finished with a game-high 33 points leading the visiting Rangers to the 79-73 non-conference victory over UIC, handing the Flames its first loss to a Division II squad since 1986. With the victory, UW-Parkside improves to 3-7 on the season, while the Flames drop their third straight, falling to 3-6 on the campaign. UIC senior forward Armond Williams led four players in double-figures with 17 points, followed by Cedrick Banks (15 points), Elliott Poole (12 points) and Justin Bowen (10 points, 9 rebounds).
