INDIANAPOLIS –Youngstown State senior Rodrigo Campos (Minas Gerais, Brazil) is the Horizon League men’s tennis Player of the Week, while UIC senior Kathryn Sharples (Stewkley, England) is the Horizon League women’s tennis Player of the Week for the week of March 24-30. This is the first League honor for both seniors on the year.

The Youngstown State men’s tennis team competed on Sunday in a conference dual match at Detroit. The Penguins won the match 4-3 to pick up the team’s first League win of the season. The team is currently 4-11 overall and 1-2 in Horizon League play.

Campos paired up with teammate Max Schmerin at No. 2 doubles to seal the doubles point with an 8-7 victory. Campos also posted a win at No. 6 singles against Detroit’s Chance Conley 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. The singles win for the senior clinched the match for Youngstown State over the Titans.

The UIC women’s tennis team went 2-0 on the weekend with victories over Butler and conference-foe Wright State. Against Butler, the Flames defeated the Bulldogs in a convincing 6-1 defeat and followed-up that performance winning 7-0 over the Raiders in conference play.

Sharples went a perfect 4-0 winning in singles and doubles play at both dual matches. The senior defeated Butler’s Stephani McLoughlin 6-3, 6-0. With Mariana Palacios at No. 1 doubles, the duo won 8-7 (6) to help pick up the doubles point. The following day against Wright State, Sharples won in three sets against Linsey Verstrepen 6-4, 3-6, 10-8. At No. 1 doubles with Palacios, the pair won 8-3 in the shutout victory over the Raiders.

Youngstown State is back on the court against St. Bonaventure in Olean, N.Y. Sunday, April 6. UIC continues conference play this weekend taking the road to face Milwaukee Saturday and Green Bay Sunday.

Top Men’s Tennis Players of the Week:
Bobby Cawood, Detroit (Sr.)—Won both his singles and doubles matches against Youngstown State at No. 1 singles and No. 3 doubles.
Hayden Joblin, Wright State (Sr.)—Won 6-3, 6-4 in No. 3 singles and 8-5 in No. 1 doubles against Valparaiso. He also won at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles against UIC.
Matt Kuelker, Cleveland State (Sr.)—Picked up a win at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles and has now won 11-straight singles matches.
Jeffrey Schorsch, Valparaiso (Fr.)—Won both his No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles matches Saturday versus Wright State. He is currently 23-6 in singles play on the season.

Top Women’s Tennis Players of the Week:
Marta Burak, Youngstown State (Jr.)—Won her matches at No. 2 singles against Oakland and Detroit. She also won at No. 1 doubles versus the Grizzlies.
Julia Fernandes, Detroit (Sr.)—Went 4-0 for Detroit in two Horizon League matches winning at No. 4 singles and No. 5 singles. She was also part of wins at No. 2 doubles in both matches.
Kara Sherwood, Cleveland State (Sr.)—Went 2-0 in singles and 1-0 in doubles over the weekend. She has now won six-straight singles matched and just one singles win shy of becoming the sixth Viking with 70 career wins.
Alysa Straub, Milwaukee (Fr.)—Went 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles play. She was part of two crucial points in win over South Dakota, providing difference in doubles point before clinching her singles win.
