INDIANAPOLIS –Youngstown State sophomore Miranda Castiglione (Brampton, Ontario) is the Horizon League softball Player of the Week, while Casey Crozier (Valparaiso, Ind.) is the Horizon League softball Pitcher of the Week for the week of Feb. 17-23.
The Youngstown State softball team traveled south to compete in four games at the Tiger Classic in Nashville, Tenn. The Penguins started off weekend competition defeating the tournament host Tennessee State 1-0 Friday evening. The following day, Youngstown State fell in a close battle against Indiana State 4-5 and then lost to Dayton 3-9. The Penguins bounced back to defeat Western Michigan 5-1 on Sunday to split the weekend 2-2.
First baseman Castiglione led Youngstown State at the plate collecting hits in each of the four contests to earn Tiger Classic All-Tournament Team honors. She compiled a .667 batting average and on-base percentage and a .933 slugging percentage while tallying ten hits. Of the ten hits, she tied a school record with four against Western Michigan, one of which coming as a home run. In addition, Castiglione recorded three runs, two RBIs, one double and one stolen base to cap-off her weekend performance.
Crozier became Youngstown State’s all-time strikeout leader at the Tiger Classic while leading the Penguins to two wins in the circle. She tabbed 11 strikeouts against Tennessee State to mark a career-high for the senior and tallied her 11th career shutout to tie for Youngstown State’s fourth all-time. Against Western Michigan, she fanned 10 in the victory and held on to her 0.00 ERA for the weekend while pitching two complete games.
The Penguins are off from tournament play until the Winthrop Classic in South Carolina where the team will take the field against Marist and UConn Friday, March 7.
