INDIANAPOLIS -- Youngstown State’s Samantha Hamilton (North Jackson, Ohio) and Kaitlyn Griffth (Orrville, Ohio) have been named the Horizon League’s Women’s Track and Field Athlete of the Week for the week of Jan. 30 - Feb. 5.
Hamilton competed in the 3000-meter race for the Penguins and finished first out of 14 competitors at the YSU National Invite. Her time of 9:40.25 set a new facility record and Hamilton broke the school record in the event for the second time this season. She beat her previous personal best by 13 seconds with the victory. It is the second time this season that the junior has been named the Female Runner of the Week.
Griffith, a junior thrower for the Penguins, competed in the weight throw and shot put events. In the weight throw, she finished first out of 12 with a toss of 59-1.00 (18.01m) to move to second place in YSU’s all-time record book. Griffith’s shot put mark of 44-4.25 (13.52m) landed her in second place in the competition. She currently leads the Horizon League in both events.
Youngstown State will be back in action next weekend at the two-day Akron Invitational in Akron, Ohio. Events start at 5 p.m. on Friday.
