INDIANAPOLIS -- Youngstown State junior Hugo Morth (Poitiers, France) is the Men’s Tennis Player of the Week while Cleveland State sophomore Victoria Bensimon (Cocoa Cocoa Beach, Fla.) is the Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 4-9.
The Youngstown State men’s squad hosted two dual matches this past week against Saint Francis (Pa.) on Friday and St. Bonaventure on Saturday. The Penguins picked-up their first two wins of the season defeating Saint Francis (Pa.) 6-1 and St. Bonaventure 5-2.
Morth went undefeated over the two matches competing at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles for Youngstown State. Versus Jimenez of the Red Flash, the junior won in straight-sets 6-2, 6-4. Pairing up with teammate Remi Chancerel, the duo won 6-1 facing Jimenez and Carvajal. The following day against St. Bonaventure, Morth won once again in straight-sets 6-2, 6-1 facing Blair. His second win of the match came in doubles play with Chancerel with a 6-4 victory.
Cleveland State faced No. 75 Michigan State on Saturday and fell to the Spartans, 5-2. The squad hit the court again the next day and fell to Toledo, 5-2.
Despite the team’s two losses, Bensimon produced stellar individual and doubles performances over the weekend. Facing Michigan State’s Aslina Chua at No. 2 singles, the sophomore won a tight three-set match 6-4, 3-6, 10-7. In the sole doubles victory of the match, Bensimon paired with Jana Schober at No. 1 doubles to win a 6-4 decision. On Sunday facing Toledo, the junior out matched Lexy Pitt in straight-sets 6-1, 6-3.
Youngstown State takes the court again today versus Toledo while Cleveland State takes the road to face Bowling Green on Friday and returns home Saturday to host Ball State.
