Youngstown State Sports Information student assistant John Vogel is one of two recipients of the 2005-06 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Undergraduate Scholarship, the organization announced on Wednesday.

Vogel (Mineral Ridge, Ohio) has worked in the Penguin Athletic Department for three years and handles the day-to-day media relations duties for the baseball, cross country/track and field and swimming and diving programs. He also redesigned the official website of the athletic department, www.ysusports.com, which was launched in December. A senior journalism major, Vogel owns a 3.95 grade-point average during his YSU scholastic career and is scheduled to graduate in May 2006.

Each year, CoSIDA presents two Graduate ($5,000 each) and two Undergraduate awards ($2,500 each) along with a Graduate Internship Grant to deserving schools and members throughout the organization.

Besides Vogel, Capital University's Monique Bowman picked up the other undergraduate scholarship. The recipients of the graduate awards were Erin Whiteside of Penn State and Michael Potter of Ball State. The 2005-06 Graduate Internship Grant was awarded to Wesleyan University and allows for the school to hire a graduate assistant on a one-year basis, hoping the success of the program can help the schools demonstrate the need for additional assistance in the future.

The scholarships will be formally announced and presented during CoSIDA's annual workshop in Philadelphia on Tuesday, July 5. The Undergraduate and Graduate Internship Grants have been awarded since 1999, when CoSIDA expanded its scholarship program in order to foster interest in the sports information field. Since presenting the first Graduate Scholarship in 1981, CoSIDA has provided approximately $300,000 in grants to students working in sports information offices at member institutions and conferences.

To be eligible for either the Postgraduate or Undergraduate Scholarships, candidates must maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average and express interest in pursuing a career in sports information.
