INDIANAPOLIS -- Youngstown State junior Drew Dosch (Canal Winchester, Ohio) has been named the Horizon League baseball Player of the Week and UIC senior Joey Begel has earned Pitcher of the Week honors.
It is the first honor of the season for either player.
Dosch racked up five hits in four games (.357) including two doubles and a home run, posting a .714 slugging percentage. The third baseman also walked three times, bringing his on-base percentage to .471 as he reached base safely in all four contests against Charlotte.
The preseason Horizon League Player of the Year, Dosch scored four runs during the weekend and drove in four. He also went 2-for-2 in stolen base attempts.
Youngstown State hits the road tomorrow for a doubleheader against Morehead State in Gastonia, N.C. and then will travel to Pittsburgh over the weekend for two games each against Manhattan and Pitt.
Begel took a no-decision in his start against Vanderbilt, which earlier today was ranked No. 2 in the country by Baseball America. In 7.1 innings of work, Begel allowed just one earned run on three hits and one walk, striking out a career-high six Commodores.
Coming into the series, Vanderbilt was averaging 10 run per game and 11 hits per game before being stiffled by Begel. The right-hander also held Vandy to a .125 average in his seven-plus innings of work; the Commodores came into the weekend with a .331 team batting average.
The Flames are scheduled to open the home portion of their schedule this weekend, hosting Big Ten opponent Purdue in a three-game series starting Friday at 4 p.m. EST.
