INDIANAPOLIS – Cleveland State and Green Bay came away with results on Sunday, with the Vikings earning a victory in the finale of the Brown Classic and the Phoenix a draw at the Dayton Marriott Classic.
Cleveland State 3, Siena 2 (2OT)
After losing a two-goal lead in the second half, Cazz Warren sent Cleveland State home happy, scoring in the 102nd minute to give the Vikings a 3-2 victory over Siena at the Brown Classic in Providence, R.I.
Cleveland State (3-2-0) earned the win after forward Alfonso Sandoval brought the ball in, drawing the goalie out and found Warren with an open look.
Warren had earlier helped stake the Vikings to a 1-0 lead, as the senior found Admir Suljevic on the left side of the 18, where the junior’s shot to the upper right corner of the goal beat the keeper. CSU continued to put the pressure on in the first half as Aaron Adkins knocked in his first goal of the season from 30 yards out in the 36th minute to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead heading into the half.
Despite the 2-0 lead, Siena came back strong with two second half goals in the 61st and 70th minutes to send it to overtime before Warren ended it early in the second overtime.
Green Bay 0, Missouri State 0 (2OT)
A strong defensive effort carried Green Bay to a 0-0 draw against Missouri State at the Dayton Marriott Classic. The match was the lone one for the Phoenix at the tournament due to inclement weather on Friday.
Green Bay (2-2-1) put Defrim Ramushevski and William Donovan on the All-Tournament Team, while Max Nimmo stopped seven shots on goal, while the Phoenix were outshot, 23-9, in the match.
Nimmo made timely saves early and late in the match, recording two saves in the opening 15 minutes before stopping five shots in the second half and overtime.
No. 25/ARV Xavier 3, Milwaukee 1
A goal from Stuart McBain in the 61st minute tied the match, but No. 25/ARV Xavier scored two unanswered goals to get past visiting Milwaukee, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon.
Milwaukee (3-2-0) trailed, 1-0, before McBain notched his first collegiate goal. Underclassmen combined for the tally, with freshman Aaron Horvat dribbling through traffic and slotting sophomore Laurie Bell down the right side. Bell’s cross found McBain, whose first collegiate shot found the back of the net.
Xavier quickly regained the momentum, scoring at the far post just 4:30 after Milwaukee had equalized. With the Panthers pressing up in an effort to tie, the Musketeers put the match away with an 89th minute tally.
Florida International 2, UIC 1 (OT)
For the second straight match, UIC lost a second-half lead, suffering a 2-1 defeat to visiting Florida International.
Ned Pavlovic scored his team-leading second goal of the season to give UIC a 1-0 lead in the first half. The junior was set up by Jesus Torres and Ivan Stanisavljevic, who both tallied assists on a through ball to Pavlovic, as he finished to the far post on the counter.
FIU’s Colby Burdette knotted the match 11:52 into the second half, and despite good looks on both sides, the match headed to overtime, where Burdette struck again with 3:52 remaining in the first session to send the Flames to their second straight sudden-death loss.
Canisius 4, Detroit 2
Detroit jumped out to an early lead, but Canisius scored the last two goals of the match to take a 4-2 victory over the Titans at the Demske Sports Complex.
Detroit (2-4-0) took a 1-0 lead eight minutes into the match on a Pat Lepera header off a ball from Moustafa Bazzi. For Lepera, it was his fourth goal of the season which currently puts him atop the Horizon League in that category.
Canisius came back to tie the match at 16:39 and then went ahead 2-1 in the 32nd minute as Detroit struggled to clear the ball out of its defensive zone throughout the day.
Trailing by a goal, Adam Bedell led the Titans in the second half, collecting his third goal in as many matches in the 61st minute. Cameron Roberts found Bedell with short pass inside the 18-yard box to tie the match.
Two Canisius goals in the next eight minutes proved too much to overcome as Gavin Falconer led the way with a pair of goals for the Golden Griffins. Overall, Canisius held a 25-12 advantage in total shots.
Cal Poly 1, Valparaiso 0
A goal in the 33rd minute proved to be decisive as Cal Poly knocked off visiting Valparaiso, 1-0, in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
Valparaiso (1-3-1) out-shot the Mustangs for the match by a 12-11 margin and both sides put three shots on goal, but the decisive tally came late in the first half. In the 33rd minute, George Malki took a shot which was blocked by a Valpo defender, but the rebound was headed into the back of the net by Mackenzie Pridham for the game’s lone goal.
Valpo pushed forward in the second half looking for the equalizer, picking up eight of its shot attempts in the final 45 minutes, four of which came in the final 12 minutes. The Crusaders actually did put the ball over the goal line on one occasion following a free kick, but the goal was called back due to an offside call. Cal Poly goalkeeper Chase Hauser also made a pair of saves within the final 10 minutes.
