INDIANAPOLIS – In the first Horizon League match of the year, Detroit knocked off Green Bay, while Milwaukee and Loyola collected non-conference wins on Friday night.
Detroit 2, Green Bay 1
Detroit notched its first win over Green Bay in nearly seven years, opening its Horizon League schedule with a 2-1 victory over the Phoenix at Titan Field.
Green Bay (2-3-1, 0-1-0 Horizon) had the better run of play in the early minutes, taking four shots in the opening minutes and outshooting Detroit (3-4-0, 1-0-0 Horizon), 7-1, in the first half.
After the half, Green Bay held the momentum and scored the first goal of the game off a header in the 48th minute, when Sam Krenzien converted a corner from Whitney Browne.
Detroit found the equalizer in the 50th minute, when Adam Bedell converted a penalty kick to tie the game.
Just eight minutes last, Bedell assisted on Matt Harkema’s game-winning goal, deflecting a ball to Harkema who flicked it into the far post at the 57:49 mark.
Milwaukee 1, Northern Illinois 0
Stuart McBain scored in the 33rd minute and goalkeeper John Shakon made four saves to help Milwaukee record a 1-0 shutout of Northern Illinois University in game one of the Lakeside Classic in Evanston, Ill.
Milwaukee (4-2-0) retains possession of the LeWang Trophy with the victory over the Huskies, a decision that also gives UWM four wins after six games for the first time since 2002 (4-1-1).
The shutout was the 13th of Shakon's career, moving into a tie for seventh on the all-time list. He preserved the win with those four saves on the day, including a pair of impressive stops on 20-yard NIU free kicks in both the 69th and 86th minutes.
McBain scored for the second time in his two UWM appearances, netting the difference-maker at the 32:52 mark.
Laurie Bell started the play with a corner kick, finding Riley Weiner near the top of the box. He chested the ball forward to the feet of McBain, who's attempt was headed towards the goal before deflecting off a backline defender and easily past the NIU goalkeeper.
Northern Illinois did end up with an advantage of 15-to-14 in shots, but UWM posted a slim 6-to-4 edge in shots on goal. NIU had eight of the 12 corner kicks, with each team receiving four yellow cards apiece.
Bell's assist on McBain's goal gave him a team-high nine points on the season and a goal or assist in the past five games in a row.
Loyola 1, IPFW 0
An 88th minute goal sent Loyola to its first win of the season, 1-0, over visiting IPFW.
Loyola (1-4-0) snapped a four-match losing streak to open the year, with Peter McKeown tossing in four saves and Jake Savino tallying a goal in the 89th minute.
After a scoreless first half, Loyola pressed forward in the second half, finally converting on Savino’s first goal of the year. After a scramble in the box, Savino’s first goal of the year sent the Ramblers to the win.
UIC 2, IUPUI 2 (2OT)
Trailing by two goals with 12 minutes to play, UIC rallied for two goals in the final minutes of regulation before settling for a 2-2 tie with IUPUI in the opener of the UIC Soccer Classic.
UIC (1-4-1) had 27 shots in the match and eight on goal, picking up a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks, but found itself down 2-0 after Kyle Hyland gave the visiting Jaguars a two-goal advantage in the 78th minute.
The Flames came right back, however, as Ivan Stanisavljevic converted a penalty kick following an IUPUI foul in the box.
The margin cut in half, UIC would find the equalizer three minutes later when Josh Beard sent a cross into the box, where it was deflected to Joel Salmeron. Salmeron’s header beat the keeper, sending the match to overtime.
After a first overtime in which neither team had a shot, UIC put forth four shots in the second overtime, only to miss the goal on each.
Bowling Green 1, Cleveland State 0
Bowling Green scored in the 14th minute and held on for a 1-0 victory over Cleveland State at Krenzler Field.
Cleveland State (3-2-0) put five of its 17 shots on goal, but could not beat Bowling Green’s keeper. Zach Ellis-Hayden had the Vikings’ final chance of the night, but his shot was saved with just under two minutes to play.
Western Michigan 1, Valparaiso 0
Valparaiso had the better of the offense, but Western Michigan held off the Crusader attack to post a 1-0 victory on Friday.
Valparaiso (1-3-1) had 16 shots and six shots on goal compared to the five and two of Western Michigan, but could not push the ball into the goal.
Western Michigan scored in the 31st minute and held on from there, using a relentless defensive attack to subdue Valparaiso. Twenty-one Bronco fouls and seven yellow cards helped stymie the Crusader offense.
Niagara 3, Wright State 0
Despite holding the advantage in shots and corner kicks, Wright State could not overcome a strong Niagara counter attack, falling 3-0, at Alumni Field.
Wright State (2-5-0) had 18 shots and five corners, compared to seven shots and two corners for Niagara, but the Purple Eagles found the back of the net on three of their six shots on goal.
Jack Welsh’s goal in the 40th minute proved to be the game-winner, and with Wright State pressing up to try and find the tying goal, Niagara added two second-half tallies to secure the win.
