INDIANAPOLIS -- Detroit junior midfielder Adam Bedell (Livonia, Mich.) is the Horizon League Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while Milwaukee senior goalkeeper John Shakon (Oak Brook, Ill.) has earned Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 10-16. The award is the second for Bedell in as many weeks, while Shakon earns the award for the first time in his career.
Detroit (3-4-0) won its Horizon League opener, rallying for a 2-1 victory over visiting Green Bay on Friday. At the Northwestern Lakeside Classic, Milwaukee (4-3-0) split its results, capturing the LeWang Trophy with a 1-0 shuout of Northern Illinois before falling to the host Wildcats, 2-0, on Sunday.
Bedell played a direct role in both Detroit goals, converting on a penalty kick in the 50th minute to tie the match just two minutes after Green Bay scored the opening goal. Just eight minutes later, Bedell deflected a ball to Matt Harkema, who found the back of the net for the eventual game-winner.
Over his last four matches, Bedell had four goals. Bedell’s 10 points lead the Horizon League, while his four goals are tied for the conference’s top spot.
Opening the Lakeside Classic, Shakon notched his 13th career shutout to lead Milwaukee to a 1-0 victory over Northern Illinois, ensuring that the LeWang Trophy remained with the Panthers. Shakon made four saves in the win before turning in three more in Milwaukee’s 2-0 setback to a Northwestern squad receiving votes in the NSCAA National Poll. With 29 saves, Shakon ranks third in the Horizon League.
Detroit will head to Bowling Green for a midweek, non-conference match on Tuesday, Sept. 18, before returning home to host Cleveland State in a Horizon League match on Saturday, Sept. 22. The match will begin at 2 p.m. ET. Milwaukee will take the week off before traveling to Bowling Green on Tuesday, Sept. 25.
