Milwaukee 2, Detroit 1
The Panther offense was in full gear Saturday night as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team recorded a 2-1 win over Detroit at a rain-soaked Engelmann Stadium Saturday evening.

Kelly Lewers scored less than 15 minutes into the game and UWM (4-7-1, 2-0-0 Horizon) pounded out 16 shots, 11 of which were on goal in an offensive attack against visiting Detroit (5-6-1, 0-2-0 HL).

After a slew of shots early in the game, the Panthers were pounding on the door. Lewers finally pushed through for UWM off great feeds from Kelsey Holbert and Morgan LaPlant. Holbert took a pass from LaPlant on the right side and put it right behind the visitor's back line where Lewers calmly shot over the on-coming keeper to open up the scoring.

It looked as though Lewers had stuck again in the 28th minute after Vienna Behnke also played a well-timed through ball, but keeper Martha Dunbar came high off her line to make a nice save to send the game into the half at 1-0, Milwaukee.

Milwaukee got on the board again early in the second half after the Panthers sent a ball into the box that took a deflection and trickled into the net for an own goal to make it 2-0 in the 56th minute.

Detroit was able to answer back on a blast from Kaitlyn Quarrell that Paige Lincicum got a hand to, but the hard shot found its way into the back of the net to make it 2-1 with just over 60 minutes to play.

From that point on, the weather started to play a factor as heavy rains poured onto the field and blew in all directions from a swirling wind.

Milwaukee kept up the pressure despite the adverse conditions, creating numerous dangerous chances in the second half, including a shot from distance by Caity Bestwina that Dunbar just got a finger on to push it into the crossbar and out for a corner.

The win is the second in a row for the Panthers, giving them a 2-0 start in the Horizon League to put them tied with Wright State for the league led.
Milwaukee held a 16-6 advantage in shots on the game, including 11-2 in shots on goal. Fouls were even at five apiece and Dunbar made nine saves while Lincicum was credited with just one save in addition to stopped numerous chances before a shot was taken.

Valparaiso 2, Cleveland State 1
Winning late-night games at Brown Field is starting to become a habit for the Valparaiso women's soccer team, as the Crusaders took down Cleveland State in Horizon League action Saturday evening, 2-1, on the first collegiate goal from freshman Morgan Manzke off a well-executed team move in the 88th minute.

For the second time this year, the Valpo women were forced to endure a lengthy pre-game delay due to inclement weather, and improved to 2-0-0 in those games this year. Saturday night's game was slated for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff, but the teams finally started play around 9:45 p.m.

Valparaiso showed no signs of fatigue from the long pre-game delay, cracking the scoreboard in just the seventh minute of action. Senior Hailey Chmela turned to get herself free for a cross from the right flank and put it into the box along the ground. Sophomore Jenny Fassbinder motored into the center of the box from her left forward position and met the ball in the middle of the box, six yards away from goal. Fassbinder took a first-time strike and beat CSU goalkeeper Sarah Wood to the right side of goal, giving the Crusaders a 1-0 lead.

The Crusaders had numerous other early chances, tallying 13 total shot attempts in the first 45 minutes. The Crusaders forced Wood to make three saves to keep Valpo at just one goal, while a CSU defender also cleared a second-chance attempt from Chmela off the goal line in the 21st minute.

Valpo goalkeeper Kristen Manski kept the Vikings off the board with a leaping one-hand push over the bar on an long-range attempt by Allie Sieradzki in the 37th minute. But Cleveland State got the equalizer less than four minutes from halftime, as Brittney Koester took possession of a missed Valpo clearance and got the ball to Vickie Havas on the left-hand side of the 18-yard box, where she turned and shot into the upper-right corner to ensure the game would be tied at the half.

The second half started out much differently than the first half, as the period got to the halfway mark with just one combined shot attempt from the two sides. Both teams would eventually tally seven shots in the second half, the Vikings placing five of theirs on frame. But most of those were long-distance strikes, easily handled by Manski to keep Cleveland State on one goal.

It looked like the game was destined for extra time before Valpo put together the pretty sequence which culminated in the match-winner in the 88th minute. The Crusaders gained possession in the midfield, where redshirt freshman Shelby Oelschlager won a header to start a run down the left side. Sophomore Jordyn Ryfiak took the header and slipped a pass ahead to Oelschlager, who continued the run down the left flank. As she reached the top corner of the box, Oelschlager slotted the ball across into the middle for Manzke, whose strike rippled the net inside the far post to ensure Valpo the three points.

Valpo ended the night with a 20-14 advantage in shots over Cleveland State (7-5-1, 1-1-0 Horizon) and put nine on goal to the Vikings' seven. Manski stopped six shots in the winning effort, while Wood also made six saves for CSU. The Crusaders earned ten of the 12 corner kicks on the evening as well.

Wright State 2, Oakland 1
The Wright State women's soccer team improved to 2-0 in the Horizon League Saturday with a 2-1 win over Oakland at Alumni Field.

Senior goalkeeper Brooke McCurdy scored her first career goal in opening the scoring at the 12:36 mark of the first half as her free kick from just inside the midfield line eluded the Oakland defense and went into the goal.

The Golden Grizzlies, however, tied the contest at the 50:16 mark of the second half with a goal and the match remained tied as it was halted at the 60:29 mark due to lightning.

Once play resumed, an own goal by the Raiders at the 64:43 mark turned out to be the game-winning goal.    A corner kick on the left side by sophomore midfielder Kalee Thompson was knocked into the goal by a Oakland defender.

The Raider defense held on to the lead the rest of the way as McCurdy finished with six saves on the day.

Youngstown State 2, Green Bay 1
Juniors Cara Armstrong and Chelsey Haney each scored goals to lead the Youngstown State women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Horizon League foe Green Bay on Saturday afternoon at Farmers National Bank Field.

With the win, the Penguins improve to 3-8-1 overall and 1-1 in the Horizon League while Green Bay falls to 4-4-4 overall and 1-1 in the league.

Following a torrential downpour during halftime, Haney capitalized on a breakaway on the left side of the box and buried a shot in the top right corner at the 51:31 mark. It was Haney second goal of the season and her second game-winner this year.

The Penguins took an early 1-0 lead just 12 minutes into the match on an unconventional goal by Cara Armstrong.

After receiving a pass from Allison Ludwig and Kayla Zoccole, Armstrong boomed a towering shot from 40-yards out. The shot landed in the middle of the penalty box and took a huge bounce over the outstretched arms of Green Bay goalkeeper Nastacia Behle.

Green Bay rallied and knotted the game at 1-1 at the 31:25 mark when Hannah Kernen drilled a shot into the top right corner of the net from 20 yards away.
The Penguins outshot the Phoenix, 17-9, while the Phoenix had five corner kicks to YSU's two.
