INDIANAPOLIS – Youngstown State junior forward Chelsey Haney (Hopewell, Pa.) is the Horizon League Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while Wright State senior goalkeeper Brooke McCurdy (Peterborough, Ontario) has been named Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 30-Oct. 6.
Haney scored the game-winning goal for Youngstown State in the Penguins 2-1 win over Green Bay on Saturday. The score was tied at 1-1 early in the second half when Haney capitalized on a breakaway on the left side of the box and buried a shot in the top right corner at the 51:31 mark.
It was Haney second goal of the season and her second game-winner this year.
Youngstown State (3-8-1, 1-1-0) is back in action Saturday when it travels to Oakland to face the Golden Grizzlies (4-7-1, 0-2-0).
McCurdy was named Defensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week after leading the Raiders to their second consecutive win. McCurdy recorded six saves, including five in the second half as Oakland attempted a comeback. Oakland outshot the Raiders, 13-8, in the contest, but the Raiders held on for a 2-1 win.
The senior goalkeeper had a big hand on the offensive side, too, as she scored her first career goal to open the scoring. McCurdy’s free kick from just inside the midfield line eluded the Oakland defense and went into the goal to give WSU a 1-0 lead 12:36 into the match.
Wright State (4-4-3, 2-0-0) returns to the pitch on Wednesday when it hosts Findlay. The Raiders resume League play on Saturday when it plays at Valparaiso (7-4-1, 1-1-0).
