INDIANAPOLIS -- Oakland sophomore Andrew Bowman (Marlette, Mich.) and Youngstown State junior Austin McLean (West Jefferson, Ohio) are the Horizon League Men’s Co-Runners of the Week, while Oakland sophomore Ashley Burr (Midland, Mich.) is the Horizon League Women’s Runner of the Week for the week of Aug. 25-Sept. 1.
The Oakland men’s and women’s cross country squad hosted conference-foe Detroit in the Golden Grizzly Open on Friday. Oakland edged the Titans in both races, winning the men’s with 27 points and the women’s with 20 points. The men ran a distance of 6K for the competition while the women ran a 4K race.
Bowman won the Open, coming in first-place in a field of 61 runners. The sophomore ran the 6K race in a time of 18:40.90 to help lead the Grizzlies past Detroit by a narrow two points.
Burr took the course for the women and placed second in a pool of 62 runners; the winner of the race competed unattached. She ran the 4K race in a time of 14:42.90 to lead the Oakland squad.
The Youngstown State men’s cross country team competed at the Duquesne Duals on Saturday. The men ran an 8K course to kick off the 2014 season.
McLean collected his first career individual win beating a pool of 98 runners across the finish line. The junior completed the course in a time of 20:20.70 to post the fastest Youngstown State performance in program history at the meet.
The Penguins head to the Tommy Evans Invitational taking place this Thursday while Oakland returns to racing this Saturday at the UDM Invite.
Top Male Runners of the Week:
Kyle Hauser, UIC (So.): Earned second place out of 34 runners at the UIC Home Opener and finished the 6K in a time of 19:58.00.
Andrew Lake, Wright State (Fr.): Placed 45th overall at the Meijer Flyer 5K Challenge crossing the finish line in a time of 16:47.00.
Marcus Paulson, Milwaukee (Sr.): Placed first at the UIC Home Opener by nearly 12 seconds to finish in a time of 19:46.70.
Top Female Runners of the Week:
Brittany Bailey, Wright State (So.): Placed 22nd overall at the Meijer Flyer 5K Challenge and finished in a time of 20:16.00.
Tess Ehrhardt, UIC (Sr.): Took first-place in the UIC Home Opener with a time of 15:45.50 in the 4K race, the next competitor was over eight seconds behind.
Leah Holmes, Milwaukee (So.): Placed second at the UIC Home Opener to lead the Panthers in a time of 15:53.20.
Tori Holt, Cleveland State (Sr.): Holt ran her 11th sub 20-minute 5K time of her career at the Dayton Flyer 5K and finished in a time of 19:58 for 19th place overall.
McKinsie Kim, Youngstown State (So.): Led the Penguins finishing second in a time of 18:21.80 at the Duquesne Duals to post the highest overall finish in her career.
