INDIANAPOLIS – Milwaukee’s Keara Thompson and Valparaiso’s Kyle Zobeck have been named the Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Month for the month of September.
Thompson, a women’s soccer player at Milwaukee, started all seven games in the month of September. She played 642 of 655 possible minutes in the midfield for the Panthers, tallying four assists during the month. The senior also collected the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory at Minnesota. Thompson helped her team to a 6-1 record in the month as Milwaukee ascended as high as No. 11 in the national polls.
Off the field, Thompson is a health sciences major at Milwaukee. The Calgary, Alberta-native maintains a 3.915 GPA in her coursework and has been named to the Horizon League Honor Roll on multiple occasions. Thompson was also named to the CoSIDA/ESPN Academic All-District First Team as a junior.
Zobeck, a senior from Coralville, Iowa, has played every minute possible in goal for Valparaiso, posting a 0.84 goals against average in the month of September. He helped the Crusaders to a 1-0-1 start in Horizon League play, including a shutout of Cleveland State. Zobeck leads the league with four shutouts and is already tied for fifth-most in a single season in Valpo history.
A mechanical engineering major, Zobeck earned a 3.961 GPA. He was named to the Academic All-League Team in 2010 and had earned a spot on the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll every semester eligible.
The Horizon League Scholar-Athlete of the Month recognizes outstanding academic and athletic achievements. To be eligible for the honor, the student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution, passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours and perform well during the month’s competition. Winners are selected by the League’s faculty athletics representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
